Giving Thanks (inspired by)

Thanks be to God, Father, Son and Spirit, for the abundance of good things he pours on His children.
We are but few, but His blessings are many.

The night before childbirth...

'Twas the night before childbirth, and all through the mother
Flew punches and kicks from the new baby brother.
The maternity pillow took up half the bed;
Her husband hardly had room for his head.
Sleep would not come, so she got up and wandered;
Creation and life and potatoes she pondered.
She caressed her belly, she sighed, and she smiled;
She felt a contraction, but just one, and mild.
Her belly was bursting, her hips had grown wide;
Her shoes by her husband now had to be tied.

The onesies were clean and snug in their drawers;
She was finished with all of her motherly chores.
She was no good at waiting, that much could be seen
So she paced around, looking for something to clean.
Restless and awkward, swollen and sore,
She tried to recall why she's said, "What's one more?"
Her ribs felt a jab from baby's sharp limb;
Through worries and memories her mind did now swim.
Contractions, deep pot holes, a much too long car ride,
Blood-spurting cords, bruised husband by her side,
Back labor, huge needles, the hospital bed,
She thought how "Is this much pain normal?" she'd said.
Though over the years she'd thanked God she's a girl,
She whined now, and prayed for a good epidural.

As she prayed she remembered the blessed relief:
The old-man like stranger with wrinkles, no teeth
Warm, soft, pink skin, and sweet baby smell,
Strong healthy lungs and the very first yell,
Calm sleepy sighs, quiet breathing in sync,
The best-tasting orange juice ever to drink,
The look of proud daddy gently receiving
God's newest blessing, and once more believing
That He who creates and provides and sustains,
His gifts far outweigh the fear and the pains.

Eyes dancing, grinning, skin jumpy and prickly,
she whispered once more, "Come baby, come quickly!"

What I love about third trimester

It now takes more energy to do the job myself than it does to explain it to the nearest kid, so I try various children out on various household chores.... whaddya know, they can do more than I thought they could!

It is obvious to everyone that yes, I do need help picking that up off the floor!

It is time to get out the fun tiny baby stuff!

I nest in peace: thanks to insomnia, I get to enjoy the peace and quiet of odd hours in the night.

I have every excuse to nap at any time of day.

The girls get a kick out of painting my toes. Soon, very soon, dear toes, I will be able to reach you again!

I begin to want to be in shape again. This little flicker of motivation will blossom into an actual exercise plan in a mere six to nine months!

I was trying to come up with a top ten list, but I am stuck, and have only complaints left, which I will keep to myself (and share with my husband later.) And so finally, the best thing about third trimester is that it means PREGNANCY is almost OVER! 8 more days at the most!!!

It's really real!

The new baby!

I don't care how many times I have done this before... it is SO amazing to see a child for the very first time! It is just so strange... I don't feel much different at all, maybe a little more tired now and a tiny bit queasy now and then, but here is this little miracle, kicking and squirming and dancing around like it's the most normal thing in the world! And as I laid there, I got to close my eyes and listen to that beautiful heartbeat! It makes me feel like I have so very little to do with this amazing work God is doing... but it is such a joy to be a part of it!

God is so good to us!

done?

When Josh and I welcomed Seth into the world, our third child in four years, our friends sighed a sigh of relief. "Oh good, you got your boy! Now you can be done!"

When Marcus came along, he made things "nice and even" so that we could be "done."

When Eldon came along, many people just shook their heads, and assumed, I guess because five kids in six years is pretty crazy, that NOW we must be "done."

So now, we joyfully announce the coming of our sixth little Cook into the world (early September or so), once again to gasps and amazement! (even screaming- with joy of course, right mom!?)

This may change, but as crazy as my life is, the word "Done" still seems to me like one of the saddest words on the planet.

We are very excited, and I must admit I am hoping to dust off my boxes of baby girl clothes this time! I do not expect to find that out for several weeks but as always, I will keep everyone posted!

(I am holding my breath a little bit as I remember Lorraine's Christmas wish as printed in her school cookbook. "I wish for a baby brother AND a baby sister!" Lord have mercy!)

Then Esau looked up and saw the women and children. "Who are these with you?" he asked.
Jacob answered, "They are the children God has graciously given your servant." Gen 33:5

Baby's here!

Praise God for the safe delivery of Eldon Daniel Cook today at 1:46pm.

Labor and delivery were uncomplicated and yes, even easy! (Praise the Lord for epidurals!) I started on pitocin around 8am, had very mild contractions until ten, water broke and epidural at about 10am, and Eldon joined the outside world with only 2 pushes at 1:46pm! He is healthy and content, and I am feeling FANTASTIC! I like this postpartum stuff so much more than the week or 2 leading up to the birth!

Marcus was happy to meet his new little brother. I think he was even more happy to share daddy's M&Ms with him at the hospital... AND climb on mommy's lap without getting kicked by the baby inside!

God has once again provided for our daily bread- I thank Him for providing kind and skilled nurses and docs, a great hospital, strong bodies to endure childbirth (mine and Eldon's!), the help of modern medicine, a wonderful husband and father of our five sweet babies, and friends and family to share in our great joy today. I am again amazed at His skillful work in the creation of another new little person- and awed that He has called me to play a part.

Things that DO NOT bring on labor

Wanting to go into labor

Praying to go into labor

A week of sleep-deprivation due to contractions, restless legs, and nesting

Vacuuming underneath the furniture

Having long discussions with the baby about how nice it would be if he would decide to see the outside world TODAY... really baby, it might be very noisy out here, but there is MUCH more room to move around!

Long walks down a country road while herding toddlers

Taking long hot baths

power vacuuming

power mopping

power window washing

power dancing

Laughing so hard your insides hurt (thanks Mary Anne and Anette!)

ENORMOUS amounts of adrenaline coursing through your body after what looked like a major head injury to Aggie (she is fine!)

Running full speed through a parking lot in a thunderstorm (after eating too much fried onion!)

Watching MICHIGAN STATE clobber UCONN! Whoo hooo! (During the game even Marcus learned how to say "they're going DOWN" ...of course it sounds more like "GO DOWN!"

So as you can see, we are still waiting. It is nice to know that we will not have to wait any longer than this wednesday (the 8th) when I will be induced. In the meantime, we are enjoying our oddly quiet house... the 3 older children left with Grammy Pammy and Bump for vacation early this morning! It has been a fun day so far spoiling our little Marcus, babying the baby who will not get to be the baby much longer!

PS I can't wait to see you mom!!!!
